The Rwanda Genocide by: Meghan Franus
Rwanda GenocideRwanda: a small, mountainous nation the size of the state of Maryland in Central East Africa sitting just north of the Equator, Rwanda was originally part of the larger area often referred to as Congo. It was colonized by Europeans in the nineteenth century (Belgian and German) and turned back to self-governance in the 1960s. At that time the country was still divided between 3 ethnic groups (Hutu, Tutsi, Twa) with a population of nearly 8 million people; today at 11 million it is one of the most densely populated countries in Africa. The mother tongue is Kinyarwandan, a Bantu language, though most Rwandans speak French and Kiswahili.
Genocide: the deliberate and organized extermination killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular ethnic group or nation. |
What is the purpose of this website?
The purpose of this website is to explore why the events in a small and previously little known country in Africa between April 6 and July 16 of 1994 have been called the most horrific violation of human rights since the Holocaust of World War II. In just 100 days nearly one million people, primarily Tutsi's but a few moderate Hutu's as well, were slaughtered and nearly a quarter of a million women were raped by gangs of extremist Hutu militia supported by a Hutu regime bent on the total extermination of all Tutsi.
